process of turning an R And D idea into an actual product/business, typically by transferring it from a research-focused organization/group (university (Town And Gown), lab) to a product-oriented one (Start Up, or more frequently BigCo).
The big question in funding your SmallCo via Angel Investing is what the future intent is: is this a first step, to be followed by Venture Capital and then an IPO or BigCo acquisition? If not, what's the exit plan? For future profits of the company to allow buying back of the Angel's investment? At what return? And what if the planned return can't be met? (more)

Ithaca Ny is the upstate exception: a successful liberal enclave in a largely conservative region troubled by unemployment woes, declining or stagnant population, and post-Detroit talk of bankruptcy... Much of that optimism comes from a reciprocal relationship (Town And Gown) with two institutions — Cornell University and, to a lesser degree, Ithaca College — which have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy and created thousands of jobs for everyone from professors to landscapers, and also fostered new companies... Ithaca’s model of education as an economic engine is one that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has made a priority this year as a strategy for all of upstate, where there are dozens of universities. In June, he signed a bill that would allow State University of New York (SUNY) branches and some private schools to offer Tax Free Zone-s for new businesses that open on or adjacent to campuses. Ithaca’s mayor, Svante Myrick (Cornell University class of 2009!), who was invited to speak alongside the governor when he promoted the plan in May, playfully challenged other leaders of Ivy League cities in the Northeast to come to his.
People who are happy but have little-to-no sense of meaning in their lives (Meaningful Life) have the same gene expression patterns as people who are enduring chronic adversity... It’s important to understand that for many people, a sense of meaning and happiness in life overlap; many people score jointly high (or jointly low) on the happiness and meaning measures in the study. But for many others, there is a dissonance — they feel that they are low on happiness and high on meaning or that their lives are very high in happiness, but low in meaning. This last group, which has the gene expression pattern associated with adversity, formed a whopping 75 percent of study participants.

Home automation (also called domotics) is the residential extension of "building automation". It is automation of the home, housework or household activity. Cell Phone-s are being used as payment (Digital Identity, DigiCash) terminal in various parts of the Third World. Account holders use text messages, or SMS, to pay for goods, transfer money to friends and family and top up the credit on their pre-pay phones. Bosses can pay salaries direct into cellular accounts and customers can deposit cash at Post Offices and some bank branches... Cell phones are booming in Africa with subscriber numbers expected to hit 100 million by the end of the year from 40 million in 2002. The technology has already been adapted for myriad projects to enhance Quality Of Life and create business opportunities. In Senegal, farmers and fishermen get the latest market prices for their goods via their phones, in South African townships AIDS counselors monitor patients on life-prolonging drugs via cell phone applications, and in tiny Lesotho, farmers receive weather forecasts via SMS.
Nick Paumgarten on the Commute. Roughly one out of every six American workers commutes more than forty-five minutes, each way... Is there a perfect commute? Many citizens of Bronxville, a small, exclusive, affluent, mostly white enclave that is as close as a town can be to New York City without being part of it, would nominate theirs. A place like this could not exist, of course, without a daily influx of labor from neighboring towns. ("Every Bronxville needs its Yonkers," the historian Kenneth T. Jackson told me.) The Bronxville commute-twenty-eight minutes from Grand Central Terminal-is a well-oiled one, and it has its proud and cagey veterans, some of them whose fathers made the same commute, back when men wore hats. R U Sirius interviews Howard Bloom re his Global Brain book. According to Bloom, we are all part of an evolving intelligent system that started at the big bang... As with Kevin Kelly's writing on neo-biological civilization, Bloom's work opens us up to the possibility that the current mainstream food fight over evolutionary science versus intelligent design may be (as usual) missing the point.
